1 Set Up Your Budget

Start here. Just the total budget is enough — everything else is optional.

Emergency Buffer

Reserve part of your budget for unexpected costs. By default the buffer is counted inside your total budget so your totals stay honest.

Savings Goal

Compare your budget with what you have saved. This is a simple calculator, not financial advice.

2 Give Each Category a Limit

Split your budget across categories. Tip: pick a template below to fill these in automatically, then adjust.

Templates split your total budget using fixed percentages. They are optional suggestions, not financial advice — you can override every amount.

3 Add an Expense

Only a name and category are required. Fill in the planned amount now, and the actual amount once you buy.

What Should a Christmas Budget Include?

A realistic Christmas budget covers more than just gifts. Try to give each of these a limit so nothing is a surprise:

  • Gifts for family, friends and colleagues
  • Food and drinks for meals and gatherings
  • Decorations and a tree
  • Travel to see loved ones
  • Events and parties
  • Festive clothing
  • Cards and postage
  • Charitable giving
  • A buffer for unexpected expenses

How to Avoid Overspending at Christmas

  • Set your total budget first, before you start shopping.
  • Give every category its own limit so one area cannot swallow the rest.
  • Record each expense as soon as it happens, while you remember it.
  • Compare planned and actual prices to spot where costs are creeping up.
  • Keep a small buffer for last-minute or forgotten costs.
  • Review your unpaid purchases before adding anything new.
