How to make a word search
- Type or paste your words into the box on the left - one per line, or separated by commas. A whole spelling list can go in at once.
- Give the puzzle a title and, if you want, a line of instructions for students.
- Pick Easy, Medium or Hard. The difficulty sets the grid size and which directions words are allowed to run.
- Watch the preview on the right. It is the actual page, at the actual paper size, so what you see is what prints.
- Print it, save a PDF or PNG, show the answer key, or create a link students can play on a tablet or phone.
If a word will not fit, the generator tells you which one and offers to grow the grid rather than failing silently.
Choosing a difficulty
- Easy
- Words run left to right and top to bottom only, never backwards, on a smaller grid - which means fewer letters to scan and noticeably larger print. Suited to preschool through Year 2, and to early readers in an ESL class.
- Medium
- A slightly larger grid, plus diagonals, and words are allowed to share letters. This is the standard classroom puzzle for roughly ages 7 to 11.
- Hard
- All eight directions including backwards, heavier overlap, and a bigger, sparser grid with more filler to look past. Good for older students, puzzle books and adult groups.
- Custom
- Switch individual directions on and off yourself - for example diagonals allowed but nothing backwards, which is a common request for younger classes.
Printable word searches that actually print
The preview is laid out at true page dimensions in US Letter or A4, portrait or landscape. When you press Print, only the worksheet goes to the printer - no site navigation, no buttons, no footer. Margins, page breaks and the answer page are all respected.
The PDF is written as real text and lines rather than a screenshot, so letters stay sharp at any zoom and the file stays small enough to email to a class.
Answer keys
Every puzzle gets an answer key on the same grid coordinates, so the key lines up letter for letter with the sheet the students are holding. Choose a highlighted key, an outlined key, or a plain monochrome key if you are printing in black and white.

Questions people ask
Do I need an account?
No. You can build a puzzle, print it, download the PDF and PNG, view the answer key and create a play link without signing up. An account only adds saving, so you can reopen and edit a puzzle later.
Can I use phrases like "Ice Cream"?
Yes. The space is removed inside the grid, which is how word searches normally handle phrases, but the word list under the puzzle still prints it as "Ice Cream" so students know what they are looking for.
How many words can one puzzle hold?
That depends on grid size and word length rather than a fixed number. Around 15 to 20 words is comfortable on a 15×15 grid. If your list is too dense the generator says exactly which words did not fit and offers a larger grid.
Will the same puzzle come back tomorrow?
Yes. Every puzzle has a short code such as WS-A7K49P. The same words, the same settings and the same code always rebuild the identical grid. Press Shuffle to get a new layout from the same words.
Can each student get a different puzzle?
Yes. Set the number of copies and you get that many puzzles from the same word list, each with its own layout, followed by their answer keys.
Do accented letters work?
Yes. You can choose whether accents are folded to their base letter inside the grid - so that É is found as E - or kept exactly as typed. The printed word list always shows the word the way you wrote it.
Can students do it on a phone?
Yes. Create a play link and the puzzle becomes a touch-friendly online activity with word tracking and progress. Students do not need an account.
Is the random filler safe for children?
The letters that fill the empty cells are checked so that they do not accidentally spell obvious inappropriate words in any direction. It can be switched off in the theme settings if a site does not need it.
