Fill in the Blank Maker

Write a sentence, mark the missing word, and print it as a worksheet with an optional word bank.

Turn this into another activity

Your words come with you - there is nothing to type again.

Two ways to mark the blank

Either type the sentence with underscores where the gap goes - "Plants use ______ to make food" - and put the answer in the answer box, or type the full sentence and the answer, and the matching word is blanked out for you.

The word bank

A word bank turns a recall exercise into a recognition exercise, which is usually the right choice for younger students, for an ESL class, or the first time a class meets the vocabulary. Shuffle it so it does not give the order away, or turn it off entirely for a test.

Questions people ask

Can a sentence have two blanks?

One blank per sentence in this version. Two-gap sentences are usually clearer as two separate items anyway.

Does the answer key show the whole sentence?

Yes, with the answer filled in and underlined so it is quick to scan while marking.
