Battery and charging
Battery Percentage
Most people call this the number inside the battery icon.
This shows the exact charge as a number in the status bar instead of only a battery shape.
This setting is present on your iPhone.
- We have this path on file but have not yet confirmed it against an official source.
Where to find it - iOS 16 and later
- Settings
- Battery
- Battery Percentage
What it does
With it on, the battery icon in the status bar carries a number. Without it, you get the icon alone and have to open Control Centre to see the figure.
What changes
When it is on
A percentage appears in the status bar at all times.
When it is off
Only the battery shape is shown until you open Control Centre.
Should you turn it on?
Good reasons to turn it on
- You want to know exactly how much charge is left.
- It makes low battery obvious before a warning appears.
Good reasons to turn it off
- You prefer a cleaner status bar.
- Watching the number drop makes you anxious about charge.

Questions people actually ask
- How do I show battery percentage on my iPhone?
- Open Settings, then Battery, and turn on Battery Percentage.
If it is not working
- On models with a notch, the setting returned in iOS 16 after several years of being unavailable.
- The number is hidden while Low Power Mode changes the icon colour, but the value is still shown.
