Exam Mode Typing Test

A stricter test for when you want a figure you can rely on. The duration is fixed, the timer cannot be paused, pasting is blocked and the result carries a unique reference.

Before you start

  • The test begins on your first keystroke and runs to the end of the fixed duration.
  • There is no pause. Restarting asks for confirmation and discards the attempt.
  • Backspace is allowed, but corrected mistakes still count against your accuracy.
  • Use full screen and sit as you would for the real test.

Exam mode: the timer cannot be paused, pasting is blocked and the duration is fixed.

The timer starts on your first keystroke. Press Escape to pause where pausing is allowed. Pasting is disabled.

  • abc Correct
  • abc Incorrect (wavy underline)
  • abc Corrected (dotted underline)
  • abc Missed (struck through)

Underlined keys are the home row. Use the opposite hand for Shift where you can. QWERTY layout.

You can practise on a phone or tablet, but a physical keyboard gives a far more accurate WPM measurement. On-screen keyboards add their own delay.

How this compares to an employer test

This mode mirrors the conditions most typing assessments use: a fixed clock, no pausing and no pasting. It cannot promise to match any particular employer, and it is not an invigilated or accredited examination.

Before a real test, check four things with the employer: the required duration, whether backspace is permitted, the WPM and accuracy thresholds, and the keyboard layout the test machine uses. Practising at the wrong duration is the most common avoidable mistake.
