Clean Energy Charging

Most people call this charging when the grid is cleaner.

Your iPhone can shift part of a long charge to times when the local electricity grid is running on cleaner energy.

Region dependent

Whether you see this depends on your country and carrier.

  • Offered only in some countries
  • We have this path on file but have not yet confirmed it against an official source.

Where to find it - iOS 18 and later

  1. Settings
  2. Battery
  3. Charging
  4. Clean Energy Charging

What it does

When the phone recognises a regular charging location, it looks at forecast grid emissions and delays some charging to lower carbon periods. Like Optimized Battery Charging, it aims to be finished before you normally unplug.

It is offered only in some countries.

What changes

When it is on

Some long charges finish later than they otherwise would, timed to cleaner grid periods.

When it is off

Charging follows only your routine and battery protection, with no grid consideration.

Should you turn it on?

Good reasons to turn it on

  • It costs you nothing if you charge overnight.
  • It lowers the emissions attached to your charging.

Good reasons to turn it off

  • You need charging to finish as early as possible.
  • You find the extra delay on top of Optimized Battery Charging confusing.

Where this setting used to live

Apple moves settings between releases. This is every location we have on file.

Settings > Battery > Charging > Clean Energy Charging

  2. iOS 16 to iOS 17

Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging > Clean Energy Charging

Questions people actually ask

Why is my iPhone charging slowly at night?
Clean Energy Charging and Optimized Battery Charging can both delay part of a long charge. Neither will leave you short in the morning.

If it is not working

  • If the option is missing, it is not offered in your country.
  • It needs Location Services and a recognised charging location to work.
