Goal

Make an iPhone easier for a senior

Larger text, simpler screens and fewer surprises.

Text Size

Available Display and appearance

One slider changes text size across the system and every app that uses Dynamic Type, and Accessibility offers larger sizes still.

Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size > Larger Text

Emergency SOS

Available Find My and safety

Holding the side button with a volume button, or pressing the side button repeatedly, calls emergency services and can notify your emergency contacts with your location.

Settings > Emergency SOS

Zoom

Available Accessibility - vision

Zoom magnifies the display, either the whole screen or a movable window, and can apply a filter such as low light or greyscale at the same time.

Settings > Accessibility > Zoom

Medical ID

Available Health, Fitness, and wellbeing

Medical ID holds conditions, allergies, medications, blood type and emergency contacts, and can be read from the Lock Screen without unlocking the phone.

Health > Profile picture > Medical ID

Settings that moved or disappeared

Available Legacy iPhone behavior

Apple reorganises Settings regularly, so an instruction written for an older release can point at a menu that no longer exists.

Settings

Display Zoom

Available Display and appearance

Display Zoom scales the entire interface, so you can choose between larger controls or more content on the screen.

Settings > Display & Brightness > Display Zoom

Magnifier

Available Accessibility - vision

Magnifier turns the camera into a magnifying glass with zoom, brightness, contrast and colour filters, plus detection modes on capable models.

Settings > Accessibility > Magnifier

Increase Contrast

Available Accessibility - vision

Colours are adjusted so foreground and background separate more strongly, which makes text and controls easier to pick out.

Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size > Increase Contrast

Home button navigation

Available Legacy iPhone behavior

On an iPhone with a Home button you press it to go home, press twice for the app switcher, and there are no edge swipe gestures.

Settings > Accessibility > Home Button

Reduce Transparency

Available Accessibility - vision

Menus, Control Centre and other frosted panels become solid, which raises contrast and makes text easier to read.

Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size > Reduce Transparency

Spoken Content

Available Accessibility - vision

Speak Selection reads highlighted text aloud, and Speak Screen reads an entire page after a two finger swipe down from the top.

Settings > Accessibility > Spoken Content

Assistive Access

Available Accessibility - cognitive

Assistive Access replaces the entire interface with large buttons, high contrast and a small set of apps, designed for people with cognitive disabilities.

Settings > Accessibility > Assistive Access

Touch Accommodations

Available Accessibility - physical and motor

You can set how long a touch must last before it counts, ignore repeated touches, and choose whether the first or last place you touch is used.

Settings > Accessibility > Touch > Touch Accommodations

Button Shapes

Available Accessibility - vision

Text that acts as a button gets an underline or a shape, so you can tell what is tappable.

Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size > Button Shapes

Per-App Settings

Available Accessibility - cognitive

You can set larger text, bolder text, reduced motion, button shapes and more for one app without changing the rest of the system.

Settings > Accessibility > Per-App Settings

3D Touch

Not confirmed for this version Legacy iPhone behavior

3D Touch sensed how hard you pressed the screen and was fitted only to the iPhone 6s through the iPhone XS generation, before being replaced by Haptic Touch.
